Printmaking

There are many types of printmaking, but relief printing is my current process.

The idea behind relief printing, for those who don’t know, is you start with a block (typically linoleum or wood) and carve away areas, leaving raised areas which are then inked. A paper is placed on top of the inked block and hand pressed or put through a printing press, printing the image onto the paper in reverse. Printmaking is an ancient process, designed so one could print reproductions of text and eventually, art!

There are other types of printmaking I thoroughly enjoy, such as intaglio and lithography, but they require very special equipment. One day in the future, perhaps, I will have a studio space to support every kind of printmaking, but for now, I am happy in my small, messy space.
